What doctors think of the Internet
What do doctors and other healthcare professionals think about the Internet?
A recent survey showed that almost 70% said their patients discuss with them information they've found on the internet. Over 80% found this helpful, improving communication, allowing the patient to be a more active partner, and enhancing the quality of the consultation.
Less then 20% had concerns about patient use of the internet and the main concern was that the patient would self-treat using information that might not be applicable to them.
What precautions do you need to take, as you 'surf the net'?
The Internet is a huge network that links thousands of other computer networks to permit communication between any two connected end points. The WWW, or World Wide Web, is considered the most advanced and easiest to use information system on the Internet. It is made up of millions of electronic documents, called Web pages. Unlike books or journals, with a formal review process, anyone can put anything on the Internet. It's important to consider the source of the information. When looking at a health-related website, look first to see if it has the HON (Health on the Net) Honor Code symbol. If so, the site has met 8 criteria recognized internationally as important for health-related web sites. If it doesn't, you may want to evaluate the site yourself, using the HON principles. You can find these on the Health on the Net Foundation website. Even if the information itself is good, if it doesn't apply to your situation, it can't be helpful. The more you know about your illness, the better able you will be to find appropriate information. You may want to ask your doctor to write down the cell type and stage of your disease, as well as the names of the treatments under consideration. Always ask your health care team to look at any information you are using to make decisions.
The Internet and health information
The Internet and World WIde Web have changed the way many people get information. Health information is the most common topic people search for on the Internet. As a consumer, how can you use the Internet to your advantage? What precautions should you consider?
There are several ways you might consider using the Internet. You can find information about disease and treatments. You can explore the options and resources available at specific treatment centers or geographic locations. You can connect with others going through similar experiences.
Connecting with others on the Internet
There are many kinds of experts and one important type of expert is the patient, or family member, who has lived through the experience you're going through. They often have both wisdom and practical tips to offer. Keep in mind, however, that each person's experience may be different and each person's journey is his or her own.
There are several ways to connect with other patients on the Internet. If you're new to the Internet, you may feel most comfortable starting with reading the stories that others have posted about their experiences with cancer.
At times, you might find it helpful to participate in a discussion group that focus on a specific issue you are interested in. Others enjoy participating in chat rooms where they can have 'real time' dialogue with other participants.
