Counselling Services
Sadly, there is no current provision within the NHS for the psychological support for those affected directly or indirectly by cancer. In these unfortunate circumstances, we are happy to suggest the following organisations to whom people can turn for professional help at a very sad time. Whether as patient, relative or friend, all offer the opportunity of one to one, face-to-face meetings with a trained and qualified Counsellor. Three are local organisations, one is national offering local help.
Medical Advice
For anyone who can't or doesn't want to see his Doctor, free medical advice can always be obtained from any of the Helplines operated by the major cancer charities and professional groups such as:
CancerBACUP: tel:0800 800 1234
Macmillan Cancer Relief Cancerline: tel:0808 808 2020
The Bristol Cancer Help Centre: tel:0845 12323 10
These are always staffed by experienced Nurses, who have further access to medically qualified people if and when required.
Cancer Counselling
Tel:01373 455255
This is a charity based in Frome who offer a free professional counselling service to anyone over the age of 14 who is affected directly or indirectly by cancer. They too suggest that a donation would be welcome.
The British Association for Counselling and Psychotherapy
tel:0870 443 5252
The Association is happy to provide a list of local counsellors to help cancer patients and their families. This is a completely free service.
The internet is an excellent source of information on prostate cancer which helps the P.C patient to make informed choices and decisions from the various opinions and forms of treatment that exist.
The patient is at a disadvantage if he chooses to play a passive role.
